Hall of Fame Plaque Biography

Chuck Michaud was the head coach of ORR’s hockey team from 1985 until 1992. When he accepted that position, the hockey program hadn’t had a winning season in nine years. Four years after he took over, ORR made the state tournament for the first time in 13 years with a 13-4-2 record. ORR became a regular contender or champion in the South Coast Conference under Coach Michaud, with his teams qualifying for the post-season state tournament numerous times, coming to within a game of the EMass Division finals in 1992. Chuck was also an assistant coach for the successful ORR football and baseball programs. A true testament to his popularity stands outside the ORRJHS in a roller hockey rink built with funds raised by his colleagues and players. Chuck’s friend and assistant coach Ray Andrews once remarked, “Chuck made a tremendous impact on all the kids at Old Rochester, not just the hockey players.”

THE COMPLETE STORY

Expanded Historical Profile

Chuck Michaud led the Old Rochester Regional hockey program from 1985 through 1992. When he became head coach, the Bulldogs had gone nine years without a winning season. Within four years, Michaud guided ORR to a 13-4-2 record and its first state-tournament appearance in 13 years.

Under Michaud, Old Rochester became a consistent South Coast Conference contender and champion and qualified for the state tournament numerous times. His 1991–92 team advanced to within one game of the Eastern Massachusetts Division final. Michaud also contributed to the school’s successful football and baseball programs as an assistant coach.

His influence was felt well beyond wins and losses. Colleagues and former players raised funds to build the roller hockey rink outside Old Rochester Regional Junior High School that bears his name. As assistant coach and friend Ray Andrews observed, Michaud made a tremendous impact on students throughout Old Rochester, not only on the hockey players he coached.

The inducted 1991–92 hockey team provides a detailed example of that turnaround. ORR went 10–0–0 in the SCC and 16–3–1 overall, beat Bourne twice and won two state-tournament games before falling 2–1 to eventual champion Westwood. The team’s yearbook identifies Jason Medeiros, Mike Kelly, Jason Smith and Matt Regan as captains, with Ray Andrews and Greg Centeio assisting Michaud. The players’ banner and the coach’s tribute to “THE TEAM” remain part of the Hall’s record of that season.
