Hall of Fame Plaque Biography

Michael Barros began his remarkable athletic career at ORR his Jr. year after transferring back from Old Colony. Mike “Big Sky” Barros had two of the most dominant seasons of all time for Old Rochester Basketball. In his two seasons, Mike scored 900 points and averaged over 15 rebounds per game. However, it was his Sr. season that Mike took his game to another level. In his senior campaign Mike averaged 23 pts, 18 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game while adding in a steal per game as well. The word often used to describe his play was “dominant”. According to Mike’s teammates not only was he incredibly unselfish on the court, he was a great teammate as well. Had they kept track of assists when Mike played, he would have had a lot of those as well. Mike’s teams also excelled, only losing five games in the two years he was at ORR. Mike led the bulldogs to the Eastern MA Division 3 state championship his senior year beating their rival Wareham Vikings in the championship game. Mike was selected as first team all-conference in both seasons. Mike was also selected as a coach’s top 48 all star in his senior year for the state of Massachusetts.

After graduating ORR, Mike took his talents to Stonehill College where he continued to display his dominance as a basketball player. Mike played all four years while attending college and was named all-conference in three of those seasons. He was named first team all-conference his junior and senior year. Mike lead the league his senior year in scoring and rebounding, averaging 22.9pts and 9.6 rebounds per game while leading his team to a league championship. He finished his collegiate career as the 5th all-time leading scorer at Stonehill, amassing 1,679 points.

After graduating from Stonehill College in 1988, Mike was drafted by the Topeka Sizzlers in the 5th round of the Continental Basketball Association’s draft. In 2014 Stonehill honored Mike by inducting him into their Athletic Hall of Fame where he still stands as the 5th all time leading scorer.

THE COMPLETE STORY

Expanded Historical Profile

Michael “Big Sky” Barros returned to Old Rochester Regional from Old Colony for his junior year and produced two of the most dominant basketball seasons in Old Rochester Regional history. In only two seasons at ORR, he scored 900 points and averaged more than 15 rebounds per game. As a senior, he elevated those numbers to 23 points, 18 rebounds, 3.5 blocked shots, and one steal per game.

Barros earned first-team All-Conference recognition in both of his ORR seasons and was selected as one of the Massachusetts coaches’ Top 48 All-Stars as a senior. His impact went beyond individual statistics: the Bulldogs lost only five games during his two years, and he led ORR past rival Wareham to win the Eastern Massachusetts Division 3 championship.

At Stonehill College, Barros played four seasons and earned All-Conference honors three times, including first-team recognition as a junior and senior. In his final season, he led the league in scoring and rebounding at 22.9 points and 9.6 rebounds per game while guiding Stonehill to a league championship. He completed his college career with 1,679 points, then ranked fifth in program history.

After graduating from Stonehill in 1988, Barros was selected by the Topeka Sizzlers in the fifth round of the Continental Basketball Association draft. Stonehill inducted him into its Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014. His own original ORRAHOF plaque confirms his induction into the Old Rochester Regional Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.
