Joao Rodrigues contribution to ORR athletics went far beyond his 343 track victories, 4 SEC Championships, 16 SCC Championships, 6 State Relay Championships and election to the State Track Coaches Hall of Fame. As Buddy Thomas, Sports Editor of the Standard Times, said “he was a genuine, caring individual...a competitor willing to face any challenge.” His first challenge was to mold a group of female athletes into the girls first track team, a team that rose to second in the 1972 state rankings. He faced his biggest challenge in 1983 as athletic Director when budgetary problems threatened the program. In 1996 John was named Athletic Director on the Year for his contributions to ORR athletics.
