Hall of Fame Plaque Biography

As Wayne Caswell dominated his sports in the mid ’70s, Frank Oliva set new standards on the gridiron and track. In 1976, Frank led the Bulldogs to an undefeated football season and the SMC crown. He was named First Team All Conference running back and First Team All State defensive back. On the track, Frank set school records in the javelin and 100 yard dash. In 1976 he was a member of the SMC champion 4x100 relay team and was the SMC and Class C State Champion in the javelin, finishing second in the New England Championships. After graduation from ORR, Frank attended Princeton University, earning a BA in Architecture while continuing his football and track careers.

THE COMPLETE STORY

Expanded Historical Profile

Frank Oliva helped define one of the strongest periods in Old Rochester Regional athletics. A member of the Class of 1977, he combined speed, power and versatility across football and track and field, setting standards in both sports. His senior yearbook also named him and Holly Wescott the class’s “Best All Around” students.

In 1976, Oliva led the Bulldogs through an undefeated football season and the Southeastern Massachusetts Conference championship. He earned First Team All-Conference recognition as a running back and First Team All-State honors as a defensive back. The 1977 yearbook described the team’s unity, dedication and desire as producing the finest record in school history. His 30 career touchdowns remained ORR’s school record until 2017.

Oliva was equally accomplished on the track. He established ORR records in the javelin and 100-yard dash, ran on the SMC-champion 4x100 relay team, and won both the conference and Class C state championships in the javelin. His state-title season concluded with a second-place finish at the New England Championships.

At Princeton University, Oliva continued in track and field. Princeton’s official records credit him with a 214-foot javelin throw at the 1978 IC4A Championships and list him as a 1979 track letterwinner. He studied architecture and later established his own architectural practice.

Oliva entered the inaugural Old Rochester Regional Athletic Hall of Fame class in 2011. His induction honored an athlete whose impact reached from an undefeated football field to championship throws and sprints, and then to Ivy League competition.

Documenting the record

Transcription reconciled word for word with the original 2011 physical plaque photograph IMG_1804.JPEG, supplied by ORRAHOF, on October 10, 2026. Original wording and punctuation are preserved.

Verified against Frank Oliva’s original 2011 Hall of Fame plaque and contemporaneous 1977 ORR yearbook photographs supplied by ORRAHOF. The plaque remains the source for the official induction-era biography.

The 1977 yearbook identifies returning seniors Kunces, Lambo, Pina and Oliva and describes the 1976 Bulldogs’ unity, dedication and desire as producing the finest record in school history. Princeton University Athletics lists Oliva’s 214-foot javelin throw at the 1978 IC4A Championships and identifies him as a 1979 track letterwinner. A 2017 Boston Globe report states that his ORR career record of 30 touchdowns stood until that year. Frank Oliva Architect documents his later professional practice.

October 1, 2026 source review: the original yearbook photograph IMG_1281.HEIC in Frank Oliva’s Hall-owned archive explicitly names Holly Wescott and Frank Oliva as “Best All Around.” IMG_1283.HEIC shows the complete 1976 football team and the returning-seniors panel identifying Kunces (73), Lambo (41), Pina (40), and Oliva (66). The partial team close-up is not used to identify Oliva by an unsupported position.

College mark checked against Princeton University Athletics’ outdoor records, which lists Frank Oliva’s 214-foot javelin performance at the 1978 IC4A Championships in the old-javelin records.
