Hall of Fame Plaque Biography

Donald Dorr, along with Peter Trow, became the face of ORR athletics in the 1960’s. He was ORR’s first four sport athlete, lettering in football, basketball, baseball and track. Donald was named baseball MVP in ’65 and ’66. On the gridiron, he captained the 1965 football team to an undefeated season, limiting opponents to a total of 16 points. Donald was an All State Class D Defensive Back as a junior and All State Class D Quarterback as a senior. After high school, he attended Syracuse University where he lettered in football in ’67, ’68 and ’69 and captained the Orangemen in ’69. He was named the team’s MVP in 1969 and played in the Blue-Gray Game in Alabama. Since graduation from college, Donald has coached football in Weymouth, Barnstable and Plymouth.

THE COMPLETE STORY

Expanded Historical Profile

Donald H. Dorr helped define the first great era of Old Rochester Regional athletics. A member of the Class of 1966, he became ORR’s first four-sport athlete, lettering in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was named the baseball team’s most valuable player in both 1965 and 1966, but his broadest impact came as a leader of the young football program.

As a junior, Dorr earned All-State Class D honors as a defensive back. The following fall he moved to quarterback and served as a co-captain with James DeCosta on the 1965 Bulldogs. In only ORR’s fifth varsity season, the team finished 8–0, recorded six shutouts and outscored its opponents 157–16. Dorr earned All-State Class D recognition again, this time at quarterback, helping establish a standard that later ORR teams would measure themselves against.

Dorr continued his football career at Syracuse University under Hall of Fame coach Ben Schwartzwalder. He earned varsity letters in 1967, 1968 and 1969, developing from a defensive back into a 207-pound linebacker. His Syracuse teammates included Larry Csonka and Tom Coughlin. As a senior, Dorr received the program’s Bill Horr Most Valuable Player Award and represented Syracuse in the 1969 Blue–Gray All-Star Game.

Football remained central to Dorr’s life after college. He coached in Weymouth before becoming Barnstable High School’s head coach from 1977 through 1980, then later led the program at Plymouth South. Across those stops, he carried forward the discipline, preparation and team-first standards that had shaped his own playing career.

Dorr entered the inaugural Old Rochester Regional Athletic Hall of Fame class in 2011, joining the undefeated 1965 football team when that group was inducted the following year. His legacy connects several generations of the sport: ORR’s first years, Syracuse football during the Schwartzwalder era, and the Massachusetts high school players he later coached.

Documenting the record

Transcription reconciled word for word with the original 2011 physical plaque photograph IMG_1798.JPEG, supplied by ORRAHOF, on October 10, 2026. Original wording and punctuation are preserved.

Official 2011 ORRAHOF plaque and 1965 ORR yearbook photographs supplied by the Hall of Fame. ORR team history confirms the 1965 Bulldogs finished 8–0, recorded six shutouts and outscored opponents 157–16.

Syracuse University Athletics confirms Dorr lettered in 1967, 1968 and 1969, received the 1969 Bill Horr Most Valuable Player Award and appeared in the 1969 Blue–Gray Game. Syracuse’s all-time captain register lists “Game Captains” for 1969 rather than a named season captain; the plaque’s captaincy wording is preserved verbatim while the expanded profile avoids overstating that detail. Cape Cod Life and contemporaneous Barnstable newspaper records document his Barnstable head-coaching tenure from 1977 through 1980 and later coaching at Plymouth South.

October 3, 2026 gallery additions: IMG_1201.HEIC in Donald Dorr’s Hall-owned Drive folder names Laura Bates and Donald Dorr as Most Athletic. IMG_1200.HEIC names Donald Dorr and Maureen Duff as Best All-Around. Both original yearbook photographs were visually verified and converted to JPEG without cropping, retouching or generative changes; original sources remain in Drive. Existing portrait and sports gallery retained. IMG_1203.HEIC repeats the football coaches/co-captains image, and IMG_1207.HEIC repeats the basketball dunk image already present.
