Hall of Fame Plaque Biography

Christopher Riley, the most versatile athlete in ORR history, earned 14 letters in 5 different sports: 4 in football and basketball, 3 in track, 2 in tennis and 1 in baseball. On the basketball court, he was a 3 year starter at point guard and a Standard Times All Star twice, but it was on the gridiron as a two-way starter where he enjoyed his greatest success. As a 4 year starting quarterback, Chris passed for over 4,000 yards and 24 touchdowns. As a free safety, he had 10 interceptions. He was selected a Standard Times All Star three times and won the Otto Graham Award his senior year. He also earned All State First Team honors during his junior and senior years. Recruited heavily, Chris chose UConn where he played quarterback for 4 years.

THE COMPLETE STORY

Expanded Historical Profile

Christopher Riley was one of the most versatile athletes in Old Rochester Regional history. He earned 14 varsity letters in five sports: four in football, four in basketball, three in track and field, two in tennis and one in baseball. That range of achievement made him a major contributor across ORR athletics throughout his high school career.

In basketball, Riley was a three-year starting point guard and twice received Standard-Times All-Star recognition. His most distinguished accomplishments came in football, where he started at quarterback for four years. He passed for more than 4,000 yards and 24 touchdowns while also playing free safety and recording 10 interceptions.

Riley was named a Standard-Times All-Star three times, earned All-State First Team honors during his junior and senior seasons, and received the Otto Graham Award as a senior. He was heavily recruited after graduating from ORR in 1983 and chose the University of Connecticut, where he played quarterback for four years.

UConn’s football records list Riley, from Mattapoisett, as a letterwinner from 1983 through 1986. In 1984 he led the Huskies in passing, completing 99 passes for 1,360 yards and nine touchdowns. His collegiate record continued the quarterback career that had brought him regional and statewide recognition at ORR.

Documenting the record

Transcription reconciled word for word with the original 2011 physical plaque photograph IMG_1808.HEIC, supplied by ORRAHOF, on October 10, 2026. Original wording and punctuation are preserved.

Verified against the original 2011 Hall of Fame plaque photograph and 1983 ORR yearbook photographs supplied by ORRAHOF. The public sports images received only non-generative cropping, grayscale conversion, restrained tonal correction, and modest sharpening; archival originals were preserved separately.

Collegiate history checked October 1, 2026 against UConn Athletics’ 2023 football records and history: PDF page 6, year-by-year passing leaders, and page 45, letterwinners. The record identifies Chris Riley of Mattapoisett as a 1983–86 letterwinner and gives his 1984 passing totals. Original plaque wording retained.
