Billy Garcia was one of ORR’s first standout 3 sport athletes, playing football, basketball and baseball from 1961-1965. Starting in ORR’s first ever football game as a freshman, Billy played running back on offense and safety on defense. He made what could be characterized as a “Malcolm Butler play,” knocking down what would have been the game-tying touchdown pass in the end zone to secure a 7-0 Bulldog victory in the 1964 Cranberry Bowl game against Wareham High. Billy was a 3-year varsity starter on the basketball team and was a Narragansett League All-Star, and his skills on the baseball field earned him a spot on the Standard Times All Star team. He was co-captain of the football, basketball and baseball teams as well. Recognizing Billy’s leadership qualities both on and off the field and court, his classmates elected him Class President of his Senior Class. After graduating from ORR, Billy served in the U.S. Air Force. If there was an “All-ORR Team,” Billy Garcia would certainly be on it, as he has also served ORRHS as the school’s Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds as well as a bus driver.
